Not every gig on Danny Knapp’s calendar is a club date or a festival stage. This summer included several private events — bookings the Southern California bassist plays each year alongside his regular band schedule.
Private events run differently than a typical night out. There’s no opener, no walk-up crowd, and often no soundcheck in the traditional sense — just a room full of people there for someone else’s occasion, and a band whose job is to read that room and keep it moving. It’s a different muscle than playing to a crowd that showed up specifically for the music, and it’s one Danny’s picked up across years of hired-gun work.
It’s every bit as fulfilling as the marquee shows, though — there’s something genuinely satisfying about being part of the memory-making for someone’s milestone occasion, whether that’s a wedding, an anniversary, a birthday, or a corporate event. It’s not the side of the job that makes it onto a highlight reel, but it’s a steady, meaningful part of how a working musician’s year actually looks.
