About Danny Knapp — known on stage as The Melonhead, Southern California bass guitarist.

Danny Knapp didn’t set out to become “The Melonhead.” The name started as a joke about his bald head and stuck the way good nicknames do — and it’s followed him through more than two decades, ten-plus active bands, and a session and touring career built one gig at a time across Southern California. He relocated to the region in 2012, chasing more stages and more opportunities to play — the kind of move that only makes sense when the music comes first.

What makes Danny different from a lot of hired-gun bassists isn’t just the résumé — it’s the range. In any given month he might be locking in Steve Harris bass lines for an Iron Maiden tribute, driving the horn-heavy groove of a ska outfit, laying down a session track for a singer-songwriter, or coaching another bassist through audition prep. He treats all of it with the same seriousness: show up prepared, play the part the song actually needs, and make the person who hired him look good.

Offstage, Danny holds down a full-time career as a software engineer for a Fortune 120 company. It’s an unlikely pairing on paper, but the same habits that make him a reliable hired-gun bassist — showing up prepared, solving problems calmly, and doing the work right the first time — carry over just as well from the office to the stage. That’s the through-line in the About Danny Knapp story: two careers, one set of habits.
