Close-up of the neck of my bass named “Sakura”. It’s a 2008(ish) Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 5 HH that I’ve customized quite a bit. I had it Plek’d & set up by @13thStreetGuitars, and now the action and feel on this bass is absolutely perfect for me.
Maybe I’m smiling because I just checked my calendar and realized it’s Halloween Week! 🤘😉

throwbackthursday October 2019, soundcheck and performance at the Palm Desert Civic Center with LA Sound Machine. It’s only been a year, but seems like forever since we’ve gotten to play in front of a crowd like this. I feel very fortunate that I still get to perform music via online streaming concerts and drive-in shows, but I look forward to seeing all the smiling faces in-person as soon as it’s safe again.

Presenting a softer, quieter Melonhead for a soothing evening vibe 😉. I enjoy the challenge of getting to play ‘unplugged’ on my acoustic fretless bass — it requires adapting my bass lines to the highlight the essence of the song without getting in the way. I find that it’s much harder to play slow and quiet and still maintain technique and accuracy, because there’s a lot more room to mess up, and there’s no where to hide. At the same time, nothing’s more expressive than an a pared down acoustic song. It tugs at the heart 🖤.

I don’t play with a guitar pick very often. However, sometimes you really need that really aggressive attack that you can only achieve by using a pick.
